Crypto Rallies Following Democrat Midterm Sweep
$BTC up 4% from local bottom
- Published:
As prophesied by prediction markets, the Democrats have swept the U.S. midterm elections, sparking a wave of volatility throughout crypto markets.
But despite the Democrat’s historically anti-crypto views, markets are reacting positively to the shifting tides of political power. $BTC and other majors like $SOL, $ETH, and $ZEC have bounced hard off the election lows, adding $100B to crypto’s total market cap in a matter of hours.
Despite the temporary relief, analysts have asserted that the Democrat’s midterm sweep will have no structural impact on crypto market structure, sharing optimistic views that the result brings an air of certainty conducive to healthy markets.
Democrat Midterm Sweep Sparks Market Surge
The Democrats have swept the U.S. midterms, gaining control of the Senate and the House in a decisive victory. Defining issues among voters were affordability and the ongoing energy crisis, issues no doubt exacerbated by the US-Iran war.
While many believed a Democrat victory would spell a bearish future for the crypto industry, markets appear to have had other ideas. After trending downwards for weeks into the Midterm election, global markets have rallied hard upon their resolution.
As the Democrats started celebrating their victory, the S&P 500 surged 2.3%, reclaiming the $7,650. Meanwhile, metals are starting to look precious once again, with Gold and Silver adding a combined $1T to their market caps.
Beyond TradFi, bullish optimism has overflowed into crypto markets. Majors like $BTC, $SOL, and $ETH climbed 3.9%, 4.7%, and 4.5% respectively, with privacy leader $ZEC soaring 12.3%. While the powerful move to the upside could be attributed to a corrective mean reversion after a sustained downtrend, history suggests the months following midterm elections are resoundingly bullish.
Since 1942, the S&P 500 has traded higher in the following June in every year following the U.S. midterms. While this by no means guarantees positive price action in the coming months, traders are nonetheless drawing confidence from historical data.
Analysts Argue Midterm Impact is Overstated
The U.S. midterms are undoubtedly a landmark political event, but analysts and investors have argued that they have a greater impact on market sentiment rather than anything structural.
For example, while the Democrats regaining control in the House and Senate might look bearish for crypto regulation, the win doesn’t suddenly bestow sweeping power over SEC policy and frameworks.
The Republicans may have lost the midterms, but the regulation campaigns and legislation projects that have already been set in motion will continue to drive forward.
The SEC and the CFTC remain fully committed to laying clear foundations for crypto businesses in the U.S., as evidenced by progress towards bringing regulated 24/7 perpetual futures markets to the world’s largest economy.
Meanwhile, the White House Cabal now finds itself under the microscope. Following their sweep of the midterms, the Democrats have expressed an intent to investigate the Trump family’s crypto businesses, starting with World Liberty Financial.
Prediction Markets Price the Truth, Again
Prediction markets like Kalshi and Polymarket have once again proven their worth, forecasting the end result long before voters descended on the ballot boxes.
Beyond simple betting platforms and trading venues, prediction market data is rapidly becoming a key piece of trading infrastructure. Forecasting probabilistic outcomes gives traders and investors useful data that can help inform their other trading strategies.
