X Adds a “Trade” Button to Cashtags, Putting $BTC and $SOL One Click From U.S. Users

X users in the U.S. can now move from market conversations to stock and crypto trades through brokerage partners.

X has launched its U.S. Cashtag Partner Program, giving users a new way to move from discussing an asset on the platform to trading it through participating brokerages.

Cashtags turn stock, ETF, and cryptocurrency tickers into interactive pages. Users can tap a supported Cashtag to see price information and related posts, then select the new “Trade” option to continue to a participating brokerage.

X does not execute the trade itself. Instead, the platform redirects users to the brokerage’s app or website, where they can sign in or create an account and complete the transaction.

The launch partners include Interactive Brokers, Moomoo, Gemini, Kraken, and Coinbase. The initial rollout covers U.S. users, while asset availability varies between partners.

$SOL, $BTC and Other Crypto Assets Enter the Flow

The integration also extends Cashtags beyond traditional markets. Gemini said its X integration supports stocks alongside $ZEC, $HYPE, $BTC, $ETH and $SOL. Kraken said U.S. users can route any crypto Cashtag to its platform, while noting that its broader catalog contains more than 2,400 tokens.

These figures describe each brokerage's available assets, not the number of assets that X itself supports through Cashtags.

The workflow remains relatively simple: users discover an asset, inspect its chart and conversation on X, select a brokerage, and then complete the transaction there.

X Closes Part of the Gap Between Attention and Action

Cashtags have existed for years as a way to organize financial conversations on Twitter, with Stocktwits credited with introducing the concept in 2008. Their original purpose focused on tracking discussions around individual assets.

The new program adds a financial action layer to that existing behavior.

Nikita Bier, who recently stepped down as X's Head of Product, said the launch addresses a gap between retail narratives and actionable financial activity.

Other industry figures see greater potential, particularly for crypto. Simon Dedic, Founder and Managing Partner of Moonrock Capital, argued that a future native onchain version could reduce the need for users to create exchange accounts, download wallets, and fund them with gas before purchasing tokens.

Akshay BD, former CMO of the Solana Foundation, described the development as compressing the path from “views to flows” into a single click.

The Onchain Question

Aditya Shetty, Lead of Superteam India, highlighted the remaining limitations. Today's flow still requires users to maintain a KYC-verified and funded account with a supported partner. Users also leave X to complete the transaction and may need to compare prices and fees across different platforms.

Scaling the model globally could also require separate technical and commercial integrations with individual financial providers.

Shetty argued that an onchain financial infrastructure could offer another approach. In his view, Solana could provide a common API for financial applications, while Token Extensions could enforce asset-level rules. That could allow different applications to support assets without building separate integrations for every provider.

Such a model could also shift competition toward execution, wallet integration, and asset selection while reducing switching costs for users.

More Actionable, But Also More Risk

Connecting financial conversations directly to trading could speed up how quickly market narratives translate into transactions.

That could improve accessibility, but it also raises concerns about market manipulation. AI-controlled accounts, spammers, and other bad actors could potentially use X's influence over financial conversations to amplify narratives and encourage trading activity.

Those risks already exist on X, but a direct path from a post or Cashtag to a brokerage could shorten the distance between influence and execution.

For now, X's Cashtag program represents a relatively limited step: users can discover supported assets on X and move to participating brokerages to trade them. The larger question is whether that model eventually evolves into a native financial layer where users can trade onchain without leaving the social platform. If that happens, the relationship between social media, financial markets, and crypto could change considerably.
