Hivemapper Partnerships Create Buzzing Speculation Around New Verticals

Why would a mapping project partner with media companies and telcos?

Hivemapper, a prominent Solana DePIN protocol mapping the world’s roads, looks to be gearing up for expansion into new sectors.

The world’s fastest-growing map project in history, Hivemapper’s recent partnerships have little to do with street-level image capture. Meanwhile, Hivemapper founder Ariel Seidman’s cryptic tweets about the company's next steps have left users buzzing with anticipation.

Hivemapper Partners With NBC, Fortex

Bee Maps, the hardware company powered by the Hivemapper network, has announced a slew of perplexing partnerships in the last few days. While Bee Maps typical partners, like lyft, a ride-sharing app, and TomTom, a GPS navigator, make logical sense for a mapping DePIN project, more recent collaborations have left users scratching their heads.

On June 17, Hivemapper founder and CEO Ariel Seidman announced Bee Maps’ partnership with NBC Universal, one of the world’s largest media companies. Two days later, on June 19, Seidman shared that the firm was teaming up with Fortex Design, a telecommunications and utility engineering company.

Naturally, ecosystem participants are trying to connect the dots between the seemingly unrelated companies. While the scope of a partnership with a media company like NBC Universal is infinitely broad, Bee Maps’ collaboration with a telecommunications company is harder to pinpoint, at least at first glance.

Fortex Design’s website suggests the company has previously serviced Telco giants like AT&T and Verizon with its infrastructure and design planning. While this could suggest that Hivemapper is gearing up to challenge Helium, a fellow Solana-based DePIN protocol, it's more likely that Bee Maps wants to accelerate its mapping coverage.

Alongside its Telco services, Fortex Designs offers GIS (Geospatial Information Systems) services. This includes field surveying, both above and below ground. Using Ground-Penetrating Radar and Unmanned Aerial Vehicles, Hivemapper could be planning to expand its global map beyond street-level imagery.

For the time being, Hivemapper CEO Ariel Seidman has been playfully reluctant to share specific details as to the DePIN project’s forward plans. In his more recent posts, Seidman has suggested Bee Maps’ recent partnerships will help the company expand into new verticals: telecommunications and utilities.

Adding to the mystery, Seidman teased last week that Bee Maps had also secured a partnership with a Fortune 20 company.

Given that neither NBC Universal nor Fortex Designs are listed in the Fortune top 20 rankings, it is likely that Bee Maps is still sitting on further significant partnership announcements.

World’s Fastest-Growing Map Company Hits 33% Global Coverage

Through its Bee Maps dashcam, Hivemapper now provides up-to-date coverage of over 33% of the global road network, covering over 544M km worldwide.

Based on Dune Analytics data collected over the past week, over 2.4M $HONEY tokens have been distributed to 6,211 network contributors. Mapping data provision remains the most common means of reward distribution, making up 67.9% of all contributor payments.

Hivemapper supporters remain hopeful that Bee Maps’ expanding customer base will accelerate $HONEY token burns. Through Hivemapper’s demand-based mint-and-burn flywheel, customers burn $HONEY tokens to consume data and power their products.

Solscan data indicates that the protocol has burned over 800k $HONEY tokens in the past 24-hours, with Seidman assuring the Hivemapper community that the DePIN powerhouse still has “more to come.
