Crypto CEOs Head to the White House as Open Interest Reaches Pre-10/10 Levels

Crypto enters a crucial week with Bitcoin above $64,000, leverage rebuilding and Washington opening talks with industry leaders.

Bitcoin started the week breaking the $64,000 level as risk assets moved higher, but several developments could determine whether the market finally breaks out of its summer range.

The biggest market signal comes from leverage. Velo data shows Bitcoin's aggregated open interest has climbed back above levels seen before the October 10 market crash.

That suggests traders have rebuilt significant derivatives exposure after months of deleveraging, creating both greater upside potential and greater liquidation risk.

At the same time, crypto executives are heading to Washington for a potentially important week of policy discussions.

Trump Expected at Crypto CEO Meeting

President Donald Trump is expected to attend a White House meeting on Wednesday involving leaders from crypto, prediction markets, artificial intelligence and traditional finance.

The gathering reportedly could include executives from Coinbase, Ripple, Gemini, Robinhood, Polymarket and Kalshi, alongside representatives from Nasdaq, the New York Stock Exchange, CME Group and the Depository Trust & Clearing Corporation.

SEC Chairman Paul Atkins and CFTC Acting Chairman Michael Selig are also expected to participate. The CFTC's official Innovation Advisory Committee includes major figures from Coinbase, Ripple, Polymarket, Kalshi, CME, Nasdaq, DTCC and several other financial and crypto companies.

The meeting comes as Washington continues debating the Digital Asset Market Clarity Act. A CFTC meeting scheduled for Thursday will focus on crypto's regulatory evolution and the remaining challenges to establishing a durable federal market structure.

Separately, the SEC on Thursday abruptly canceled a Friday session that had been set to consider whether the agency should move forward with new crypto-related rule proposals. According to an SEC spokesperson, the meeting was postponed due to an “unforeseen scheduling issue.” The agenda had included a potential vote on long-anticipated exemptions that could have allowed crypto startups to raise capital without being subject to traditional securities offering requirements.

For markets, the significance extends beyond individual regulations. Greater coordination between crypto companies, exchanges and federal agencies could shape expectations around the industry's next stage of U.S. market integration.

Geopolitical Risk Remains Biggest Threat

The U.S.-Iran ceasefire deadline expired today with negotiations stalled, while shipping through the Strait of Hormuz has almost stopped. The Islamabad-brokered MoU was meant to launch 60 days of peace talks and reopen the Strait of Hormuz. Kpler data showed only 5 commodity vessels crossed the strait on Saturday and none on Sunday, compared with 31 during the previous weekend. Before the conflict, more than 130 vessels crossed the waterway each day. The strait normally handles about one-fifth of global crude oil and liquefied natural gas shipments.

Both sides have threatened further escalation, increasing the risk of another oil-price shock.

Strategy Pauses Bitcoin Buying

Strategy added another layer to the week's debate around institutional demand. The company sold 3.46 million MSTR shares for $333.7 million last week but did not purchase Bitcoin, leaving its holdings at 840,447 $BTC.

Strategy used $132.2 million from the proceeds to repurchase STRC preferred shares, spent $52.4 million on STRC dividends and added roughly $150 million to its dollar reserve. That pushed the reserve to $4.80 billion as of August 16, giving the company 2.8 years of USD duration.

Strategy still has $653 million available under its preferred-stock repurchase program and $1 billion under its MSTR common-stock repurchase program.

Meanwhile, Strive Asset Management bought another 79 BTC for $5 million at an average price of $63,231. Its holdings now stand at 20,246 BTC, worth roughly $1.27 billion.

Markets Need a Catalyst

Bitcoin gained about 1.7% over the past 24 hours to trade above $64,000. Gold surpassed $4,400 an ounce, silver remained near $66.

That broad risk appetite gives crypto some support. The rebuilding of Bitcoin open interest adds another bullish signal, but it also means the market has more leverage to unwind if prices reverse.

This makes the week nusually important. Washington could deliver new regulatory signals, institutional players continue to manage large Bitcoin positions, and geopolitical developments could determine whether oil becomes the next major macro shock.

Bitcoin has room to move higher, but with leverage back at levels previously seen before the October 10 crash, the next move could carry much more force in either direction.
