Alpenglow Mainnet Activation Set for October 21 - Here’s What You Need to Know

The biggest network upgrade in Solana history is coming

Alpenglow, a consensus upgrade first unveiled in May 2025, finally has an activation date, with Solana’s biggest network improvement in history set to go live on October 21st at approximately 14:50 UTC.

What is Alpenglow? What does it change for Solana, and what do I need to do if I hold or stake $SOL?

What is Alpenglow?

Architected by Anza, Alpenglow is a network upgrade designed to replace TowerBFT, the system through which Solana has reached consensus since the chain launched in March 2020. Having completed rehearsal migrations on a community cluster, testnet, and devnet, Alpenglow is scheduled to activate on the Solana mainnet on October 21st.

Alpenglow reimagines how the votes that bring Solana to consensus are processed. Without digging too deep into the technicalities, Alpenglow implementation brings a wealth of critical improvements to the Solana mainnet:

  • Transaction finality drops from 12.8 seconds to 12ms, an 85x improvement

  • Voting transactions move off-chain, freeing up block space and reducing validator operating costs

  • Failure tolerance rises from 33% to 40%, making Solana more resilient against malicious attacks

Perhaps the most eagerly-awaited upgrade history, Solana’s builders and wider community have celebrated the upcoming activation.

While improved transaction finality is a remarkable achievement on its own, Solana’s validator community is thrilled at the prospect of reduced operational costs. Under TowerBFT, validators are required to pay 0.000005 SOL per transaction, or around 1.1 $SOL per day to help the network reach consensus.

Under Alpenglow, these votes are taken off chain. Instead of a per-transaction fee, validators pay 0.8 $SOL per epoch, marking a slight improvement for operators.

I Hold $SOL, What Do You Need to Do?

With Alpenglow expected to go live on mainnet, certain tasks may be required of network contributors like developers and validator operators to ensure a smooth migration.

  • $SOL Holders and Stakers - No action is required. You do not need to do anything, so ignore any messages from impersonators encouraging you to sign any transactions.

  • Developers - Alpenglow changes how blocks are produced, streamed, and finalized. For more details, and to confirm whether this may affect your applications, please refer to the migration checklist.

  • Validator operators - Before epoch 1064, ensure you’re running an agave-based client, on a release built on Agave 4.3. Hold at least 0.8 $SOL in your vote account to pay Alpenglow’s per-epoch fee.

For the 376 validators running Jito BAM, Jito has already communicated that BAM nodes will be temporarily placed into maintenance mode. Jito recommends upgrading to v4.3.0-jito.0 ahead of the migration, but operators should refer to official communications in the lead up to the activation date.

What’s Next for Alpenglow?

Alpenglow activation marks a critical step in a path first laid out publicly in May 2025. After the initial rollout, Anza will continue to work towards future iterations of Alpenglow, which includes replacing Turbine’s multi-layer tree with a single relay hop.

Other future improvements are also slated to reduce the transition time between leaders by starting block production before finalization, and reducing the geographic distance between leaders.
