Africa Blockchain Festival 2025: Day 2 Highlights from Kigali, Rwanda

Conversations on creativity, technology, and the human advantage take center stage in Kigali.

  • Edited:

The second day of the Africa Blockchain Festival 2025 carried forward the festival’s mission of bridging technology and culture while emphasizing Africa’s role in shaping the future of digital innovation. Hosted at the Kigali Convention Center, the day featured thought-provoking discussions, workshops, and networking events centered on artificial intelligence, blockchain, creativity, and the future of work.

Leading the Pack: Creativity in the Digital Wild

The day opened with an interactive keynote by Jude MI Abaga titled “Leading the Pack: Thriving as a Creative Wolf in the New Digital Wild.” The renowned artist and entrepreneur spoke about how creativity and leadership intersect in a rapidly changing digital landscape.

He encouraged African creatives to take initiative, adapt to new tools, and lead communities with authenticity. Abaga highlighted that thriving in the digital space requires a blend of creative courage and strategic thinking.

Blockchain and AI: The Next Leap for Africa

A major session titled “Blockchain and AI: The Next Leap for Africa” brought together a panel of experts who examined how blockchain and AI can drive innovation, interoperability, and inclusion across the continent.

Panelists stressed that Africa must not remain a consumer of global technology but become a creator of scalable, context-driven solutions. “It’s time for us in Africa to move from users to creators,” one speaker remarked. The conversation underscored the importance of aligning innovation with policy, strengthening infrastructure, and investing in education to close the generational wealth gap.

AGI: When and How?

In one of the most philosophical sessions of the day, Joerg Molt explored the theme “AGI: When and How?” Molt challenged the notion that artificial general intelligence will one day replace human consciousness. “AGI won’t come. We need consciousness for AGI. How do you get your spirit into a machine?” he asked.

He emphasized that AI should serve as a tool rather than a threat, encouraging participants to use it frequently and wisely. Molt drew a comparison to unexpected scientific breakthroughs, noting that AI, unlike humans, cannot experience intuition or emotion. “The blockchain will change us from a communication society to a value society,” he concluded, linking technology to trust and shared purpose.

The New Rules of Money and Machines

Head of Legal Africa at Binance, Larry Cooke, led a session titled “The New Rules of Money and Machines: The Price of Progress.” The discussion focused on how blockchain and AI are reshaping governance, finance, and human labor.

Cooke highlighted that while decentralization has boosted efficiency, it has also created winners and losers in the economic cycle. “You can’t replace humans. There’s never a world where humans are less important than machines,” he said. He also reminded attendees that adaptability will determine who thrives in the digital economy. “It’s not the lawyer that’s going to be replaced by AI. It’s the lawyer who doesn’t know how to use AI.”

The session also explored the role of regulatory frameworks, such as the African Continental Free Trade Area, in building a fairer and more inclusive digital economy.

The Future of Work and AI Jobs Debate

Two panels focused on how technology will transform employment across Africa. “The Future of Work” focused on how blockchain and AI are reshaping skills, urging young Africans to embrace lifelong learning.

The “AI Jobs Debate” on the Policy & Impact Stage tackled automation’s impact on the labor market, weighing its risks against opportunities. The panel agreed that Africa’s workforce must adapt by combining technical knowledge with human creativity.

As the festival’s second day drew to a close, participants left with a shared understanding that technology alone cannot define Africa’s digital transformation. It is the creativity, curiosity, and community of its people that will lead the way forward.
